
Scratch will leave a speech (or thought) bubble up on-screen forever if you don’t use a timed speech block, but I’ve discovered that you can clear a bubble by using another empty one. This allows simultaneous sound and display so that you can use a function like the above with text like below:

The parole block plays the sound chosen a bit like the Clangers speaking. By changing the wait time, we can add more variation. In the video below, it should be clear where I’m using the standard “Say for 2 seconds” block and where I have the sound simultaneously.
This is quite an advanced topic for my kids, but it’s so fun I want to give it to them right away. They are always trying the define block without understanding what it does, so at least this would give them a concrete example.
