Gone veggie – sort of

French toast croutons on a spicy bean soup

I guess I’d be called a flexitarian, I’m not up on the lingo. On the 8th of August, I decided to stop eating meat altogether, with certain conditions.

For now, I’m still eating fish – I have a stock of canned sardines that need eating and no one else here really likes them. I also ate shop-bought salmon en croute last month that I baked in the oven.

I also won’t refuse meals made for me. That means if we go to dinner at a friend’s, I will consume a steak that has been lovingly prepared for me. I’m not going to be rude and refuse. We went to one of our favourite restaurants (Le Poirier, between Angoulême and Montmoreau) where there’s no menu. You just eat what you’re served, usually seven courses including cheese and dessert. (It sounds really fancy, but it’s not).

Even so, I have managed to completely cut meat out of my daily life. I’m not underfed or bored with what I’m eating and while it often ends up with me not eating the same thing as Fona and Finn, sometimes not. I made a veggie chilli today – it was actually even vegan – that we all had for supper and we all enjoyed it.

I may become more radical and go full-on vegan superhero (like in Scott Pilgrim), but not for now. I like eggs, cheese and other things not suited to a vegan lifestyle.

PS. The reason I’m doing this sounds like virtue signalling, but we really need to cut back on meat, as a species. It’s (one of the things) ruining our planet.
